Taziker Win Tender for Bristol Temple Meads Station Refurbishment
Published 29th June 2020
Taziker has been awarded a major refurbishment project at Bristol Temple Meads railway station after a successful tender submission.
Taziker, a leading multi-discipline engineering and construction contractor, is working on behalf of Network Rail to renovate Bristol’s oldest and largest station, including its famous Victorian roof. This is the first major upgrade of the station fabric in over 25 years; due for completion in 2023.
Improvements to the station will provide a cleaner, brighter experience for passengers. Work includes extensive metallic and woodwork repairs along with the complete re-glazing of the existing rooflights. The new modern glazing will replicate the original roof design and bring increased natural light into the station. Taziker will also repair the ornate gable ends and leadwork on the main train shed.
Taziker’s refurbishment work on the Grade 1 listed building will also protect it from further deterioration for future generations and historic elements will be retained wherever possible.
Jason Worrall Pre-Construction Director, Taziker said, “To be entrusted with the refurbishment of this important transport hub, is a great privilege and testament to Taziker’s previous success on other historical landmarks including Bristol’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, Iron Bridge and the Royal Albert Bridge in Plymouth."
Tom Nicotra, Business Development Director, Taziker said, "We understand the special place that these pieces of infrastructure hold in the hearts of local communities. They represent a gateway to the history of the area and a living place of the city’s heritage. We look forward to restoring this fantastic piece of Victorian engineering.”
Originally designed by famous British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Bristol Temple Meads opened in 1840 and has expanded over the years to accommodate increasing train and passenger numbers.
The Bristol Temple Meads renovation project is part of a wider programme of railway upgrades in the area to improve reliability, capacity, and the overall passenger experience.
Mike Gallop, Western Route Director, Network Rail, said, “This is a great moment for Bristol and the whole West of England as we will be providing a brighter station for passengers, worthy of the original creator, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We're ambitious about our plans for the railway in the city, and this is just the first step in providing a world-class station to enable more people to get to their jobs and encouraging more investment in the area."
With their head office based in the North West, Taziker started business in the 1960’s as a commercial painter and decorators. After expanding to offer core services of surface preparation and structural coatings, continued growth over the years has led to additional divisions of engineering services, fabrication, civil engineering, access and industrial services. Now a multi-million-pound business, Taziker employs over 650 employees nationwide.
