Discover the Vibrant New Mural Transforming Dalry Road Bridge

In recent months, Taziker, on behalf of The City of Edinburgh Council, has been busy refurbishing six bridges along the West Approach Road in Edinburgh. We were delighted to support the Council with the stunning new mural on the Dalry Road bridge, created by local artist Shona Hardie and recently had the pleasure of chatting with Shona to learn more about the project, her sources of inspiration, and much more.

1) Hi Shona! Tell us a little about yourself

As a multidisciplinary artist based in Edinburgh, I specialise in creating murals, paintings, and community-driven public art. When not working on-site, I operate out of my studio in Leith.

2) How did you come to work on the Dalry Road bridge?

Last year, I responded to an artist call-out to propose artwork for a local bridge. This project coincided with another I had undertaken earlier in the year - collaborating with students at the nearby Dalry Primary School to install pavement art as part of the 20 Minute Neighbourhood initiative. The brief required three design options: one inspired by the primary school students' drawings, one text-based piece welcoming people to the area, and a third inspired by the Gorgie-Dalry neighbourhood. These three proposals were then put to a public vote, and the winning design was selected.

3) Can you share how the City of Edinburgh Council’s Structures team supported the mural painting?

The City of Edinburgh Council structures team were very helpful with all aspects of facilitating the project. In particular, with the logistical elements, helping to ensure that the mural will last for many years to come.

4) What was the inspiration behind the mural?

Through my research and collaboration with the school, I discovered a vibrant multicultural community in the area. The Dalry Road bridge presented an excellent opportunity to celebrate this diversity. With a focus on positivity and optimism for the future, I built upon the strong Gorgie-Dalry logo design. I then incorporated native flowers representing diverse nationalities, weaving them organically from the central logo along the bridge. This design celebrates the area's rich multiculturalism in an engaging, visually striking way.

5) What has your experience been like working with The City of Edinburgh Council and Taziker?

Working with The City of Edinburgh Council on both projects has been an easy and smooth process. My direct contact Gert Rijsdijk (Senior Transport Officer) was professional, supportive and delivered great communication throughout. The team at Taziker were exceptionally friendly and accommodating when carrying out the mural works. I extend my sincere gratitude to both teams for all of their help.
