Iron Bridge Conservation Work Wins European Heritage Award

14 May 2020

Iron BridgeConservation work on Shropshire’s Iron Bridge recently won a European Heritage Award, announced by the European Commission and Europa Nostra, the leading European heritage network.

Taziker Industrial were employed by English Heritage from autumn 2017 to spring 2019, to complete the major conservation project on Iron Bridge after surveys revealed that the bridge was in urgent need of repairs.

Taziker, alongside our Network Scaffolding business, surrounded Iron Bridge with scaffolding and protective coverings before repairing the cast iron elements, masonry and deck. A temporary walkway was also erected with viewing points for visitors to see the work taking place on the bridge. Grit blasting and painting ensured the structure was brought back to it’s original red/brown colour.

The 21 winners from 15 countries were recognised for their accomplishments in heritage conservation, research, dedicated service, education, training, and awareness-raising.

Of the Iron Bridge conservation project, the jury said, “Its conservation approach is based on full respect of the original technology and was made possible through international collaboration and funding. It is a very good example of conservation in action, providing access to visitors and locals during the work”.

The public can vote online for their favourite winner to win the Public Choice Award until 1st September 2020.

Taziker send congratulations to English Heritage and wish them the very best of luck in the public vote.

The European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards were launched by the European Commission in 2002 and have been run by Europa Nostra, the European Voice of Civil Society Committed to Cultural Heritage, ever since. They celebrate and promote best practices related to heritage conservation, research, management, volunteering, education and communication.
